Imaginary Friend in Beaufort South Carolina

I lived in military housing on Laurel Bay in Beaufort, South Carolina from 1990 - 1993. My three-year old son had an imaginary friend named "DD". Anytime a mess was made by my son, he would say it was his friend DD.  He constantly talked about DD. I thought it was cute.

One day I was getting dressed for work and my son came into my room and said that DD was standing beside him. The hair on the back of my neck stood up. I asked him what DD looked like. He told me that DD was a big black man.

I went to work that day and told a friend about it. This friend had lived in Beaufort her entire life and told me homes were built on top of unmarked slave graveyards. From that point forward, I asked my son where DD was and what he was doing.

On moving day (when we moved away from Beaufort) my son said that DD was in the car with us. At some point when we left South Carolina, and were in Tennessee, I asked my son how DD was doing. He said that DD jumped out of the car. He has never mentioned DD again, and doesn't even remember DD, other than the stories I've told him.

Other than DD, I had the worst nightmares of my life while living in Beaufort.  I haven't experienced anything that frightening since.

  1. Did you live on Gardenia Dr? I saw something when I was 3 years old and I will never forget it. It does fit that description. We lived on the corner of Gardenia Dr and Laurel Bay blvd.

  4. I live on laural bay at the moment, on Albatross dr. and stuff happens here in my house. Also I have a few other friends that live here on base and they have their stories too. I wish someone could have told me before I moved in, because I really believe in that. I knew something was wrong, but i just never had proof. Maybe people should be well informed before they end up living here for 6mths on lease and cant get out of it. Good luck to you guys.

  6. Hi Anonymous and Christina. I'm the person who wrote this post a couple of years ago, and accidentally came across it just now, while searching for something else.

Anonymous, I don't remember the name of the street (this happened in 1991 or 1992), but we lived on base housing in the trailers. What did you see when you were 3?

Christina, what were your strange occurrences?

  8. I wrote the last comment. I still live there. Two weeks after my wife and I moved in, we got our dog. After Cinnamon got there, things started happening more and more, im not exactly sure what my dog has to do with it. But we would come home to side door open ajar after i had locked it when we left the house, my dog would be roaming around and meet us at the door like hi guys welcome home, we put her in a kenal that I kniw full well she cant get out of, let alone open the gate to, and the gate would be wide open. I told my buddy to make sure the doors were locked at all times, they like to be opened. He was taking care of the dog while we were home on leave. While in the bathroom, the frint door opened, letting Cinnamon run out. Not long after we got back from leave, my wife, dog and I were sitting on the couch watching tv one night, and We herd the lock on the side door turn and the door slowly swing open, my wife and i looked at eachother and the dog looked at me like "Im not going over there dad". I was talking to a couple buddys of mine that also live on laurel bay, amd they have both said thwy have problems with doors openening and lockes being turned.

The most recent thing we have had happen, we dont have a house phone, and our cell phones dont have a sc area code, 911 has gotten a call from inside my house twice in tje last 2 weeks, from am 843 number. And twice we have had to expalin to the cops that show up to the house to make sure everything is ok, that we dont have a landline phone. Ice tried video, and voice recordings. I didnt get anything on the video, but i have gotten voices on the recording.

  9. I live on Laurel Bay as well on a Freedom Sound side. My 2 year old son wakes up at 3:30 am few nights in a row every time almost at the same time. He seems to talk to somebody keeps saying word NO. Like he would either answer somebody's questions or just not letting that somebody to do something. Because my todder can't talk that much yet when I asked him if there was anybody in his room he said yes. He said that there was a baby and Odude". I'm scared because I've read those stories of yours you all like couple days ago and here we go. Can anybody tell me what time approximately all of those things happen at night at your house? I don't know what to say except I'm worried.

  10. I currently live on Laura Bay close to the bay and Birch Dr. We have lived in our home right around two years. I have been having problems in my house since last year after my husband deployed and I came back from vacation. It mostly happens between dust till at least 5 in the morning. I have had always been able to sense paranormal activity in my life ever since I was little. However, after having my son and daughter my senses have been extremely in-tuned. I hear walking, talking on the roof/attic, have smelled cigarette smoke so strong in my daughters room but no where else in the house, my dog goes crazy. windows have been opened, light bulbs unscrewed with only leaving one light actually work on the fan and have had numerous things happen to all of my doors. Also, I wake up between 3-3:30am mostly every night when I am able to sleep with either my heart racing or feel as though I can't breath. My daughter cries out in her sleep as though someone is hurting her and she wakes up in a panic mode look not knowing where she is at for a minute. I have to start talking to her reminding her that I am there and everything is fine. My son refuses to stay in his room in anymore. He will either point at the window or at the AC vent as if something is there watching us. Yes, always after being in my home I do too get the sense of someone is there if not one then one person is watching us. I have caught blue and red images with my baby monitor and tonight an actually shadow of two people. I am not afraid of them but they make me feel uneasy/uncertainty of the unknowing. What there true purpose of being there or what they could do by harming us. Also, why did they waited till it was just my children and me in the home. I have had family and friends come in stay in the house but most nights it is calm with no major problems that they don't blame on something else in the house. It has become so bad to me that we plan on moving once my husband returns back home. If any one knows of what could have happen over there I would love to know. I am even willing to hire a psychic/medium to figure it out.

    1. I worked with a medium when I lived on Parris Island. She taught me how to smudge properly according to Native American tradition, plus grid our home with particular crystals. It's been quiet and peaceful for the most part ever since.

  11. Laurel Bay residentMarch 12, 2013 at 12:09 PM

I live on Bobwhite Dr. and we have lived here about three years now. As soon as we moved in , my then 3 year old son would talk about his "Marine ghost", and many other random "people." He told us the "Marine ghost" follows me around and "checks the sinks to see if they are clean...." When asked to describe the man he sees he tells me he wears a "hat that looks like a cowboy hat." (Later when we went to the PI museum, he pointed out a mannequin of a DI as his ghost!) Other times he tells us he sees his "Marine ghost" in the main bathroom crying. He also tells us he has an "owie" on his forehead. Another friend he had was named "Quintin." Quintin he described as a little black boy, who follwed him everywhere... even to school. He told his teachers that Quintin was bothering him and they had no student named Quintin. I asked my son about Quinitin... "he told me he was thrown in a hole in the mud by mean men." These are very distubing things to hear from my 3/4 year old. We do not watch scary movies, we have no weirdo friends that would talk like this to influence him. We choose to believe him. There are times when I hear my name being called... "Mammma...." and it's NOT my kids calling me. They will be asleep or outside and they don't ever call me "Mamma." I hear crying and rush to check on them... no one crying... no windows open.. no v on no radio... I do know that Laurel Bay is located near/on and old plantaion called... Laurel Bay (and the Woodward plantaion which was alos here... both were burned by the Union troops during the civil war. Both plantations were in the Barnwell familiy.) The remains of the plantaion are very near officer housing. The remains of a tabby seawall near the playground. It lead to a tabby foundation of an outbuilding of one of the plantations. The first plantation (Laurel Bay) was built and used before the revolutionary war and was burned by British troops. Then it was rebuilt and then burned again by Union troops. There is a display on the Airstation in the HQ building about the plantations. They are also on the national register of historic places.

  12. @Angelwings I currently live in the Freedom Sound area of Laurel Bay and I've had similar experiences, my mom has come into my room complaining of strong smoke smells questioning me and I promised her it was not me, and a light bulb in my room has come unscrewed and sometimes when I'm in my room alone my light flickers. I get up earlier than the rest of my family so I can get ready for school and one morning my 2 year old brother was asleep on the couch and I saw him sit up and I tried to make him go back to sleep so he didn't wake my mom up and he went back to sleep, I went to eat breakfast and he comes silently into the kitchen and I asked him for a hug and he hugged me and climbed up into my lap, and he usually pushes me away. He started pointing in the living room saying "go" and he only knows a few words, one of his most commonly used being go, I followed him into the living room and he pointed to a corner where I saw nothing, and he just started screaming and crying. We have a baby gate so he can't get upstairs and he started pulling on the gate so I opened it and he ran upstairs to my mom. Also that morning, before all this happened, I could have swore I was pushed down 2-3 stairs, and my mom thinks I'm just being dramatic and a klutz but I think all the paranormal experiences happen to me because I believe in it more than my little sisters, and parents.

  13. Parris Island is also severely haunted. My daughter and I have both had numerous experiences, and even my husband has felt a dark energy in the old barracks. Most (if not all) military bases are haunted. Makes you wonder why they attract such dark energies...
